About WiNS Kenya
A Kenyan-rooted community of researchers, students, and technologists studying the brain and advancing neuropsychiatry, brain and developmental disorders research, assistive technology, and computational neuroscience for Africa and the world.
Who We Are
Women in Neuroscience Kenya (WiNS Kenya) is a Kenyan community and research network of women, and the broader community around them, advancing neuroscience and building an inclusive brain research and innovation ecosystem, rooted in Kenya, connected to Africa, and open to the world.
We bring together Kenyan women, students, researchers, clinicians, engineers, and technologists curious about the brain, connecting people across disciplines, medicine, computing, psychology, engineering, and design, to study the brain, ask bold questions, and build solutions relevant to African contexts. Unlike generic STEM or women-in-tech initiatives, neuroscience, not technology or empowerment alone , is our starting point. Kenya is not a footnote to our story; it's our foundation.
Our work is organised around four pillars — neuropsychiatry, brain and developmental disorders, assistive technology, and computational neuroscience —and neuroscience is always where we start.
Our Mission
To advance inclusive neuroscience research and innovation in Kenya by building a community where women study the brain, lead research, and translate discovery into mental health and neurological care, assistive technologies, and computational tools that reflect African contexts.
Our Vision
A future where Kenyan women lead brain research, African perspectives shape global neuroscience, and brain health solutions and assistive technologies are built with, not just for, the communities they're meant to serve.
Our Core Values
Everything we do is guided by these fundamental commitments.
Curiosity
Every scientist starts with a question; we protect the space to ask it.
Inclusion
The brain is universal; the science should represent everyone.
Rigor
Warmth and credibility are not opposites; we hold both.
Community
Discovery is stronger when it's shared.
Local Relevance, Global Ambition
Research grounded in Kenya, contributing to the world.
What We Stand For
The ideas that shape everything we build.
Neuroscience is our identity, not our add-on.
Everything traces back to the brain.
Women lead here.
Not “women supported into STEM” — women researching, building, and leading.
Inclusive brain research is our method.
We ask whose brains are studied and who benefits.
Kenya is our foundation, not our footnote.
We build here first.
There is a place for you.
Regardless of discipline, there's a path into neuroscience through WiNS Kenya.
Join Our Mission
There's a place for you here, regardless of discipline. We're always looking for researchers, students, engineers, and visionaries to help build inclusive brain research in Kenya.
